ASE A3 Certification Practice Test

Answer A is correct. Faulty outer CV axle joints click while making turns, especially during sharp turns.

Answer B is wrong. Once the water and dirt intrusion has occurred, the axle joint or the entire unit, not just the rubber boot, must be replaced.

Answer C is wrong. They are protected by a rubber or plastic boot because they are particularly vulnerable to water and dirt intrusion.

Answer D is wrong. Technician A is correct.

Answer A is wrong. Answer C is correct.

Answer B is wrong. Answer C is correct.

Answer C is correct. The clutch release/throwout bearing rides along a tube or shaft that's part of the front bearing retainer. This tube is lubricated at the factory to provide a smooth surface, reducing friction and preventing binding. Most manufacturers recommend restoring this lubricant whenever replacing the throwout bearing.

Answer D is wrong. A faulty throwout bearing makes a squealing or chirping sound when the bearing first contacts the pressure plate's fingers.

Answer A is wrong. Both technicians are correct. Air trapped in the fluid results in a spongy pedal and incomplete disengagement.

Answer B is wrong. Excess free pedal travel causes clutch drag, resulting in gear clash and vehicle creep.

Answer C is correct. Clutch drag occurs when the clutch does not fully disengage.

Answer D is wrong. Both Technicians are correct.

Answer A is correct. The internal springs weaken and break, causing excessive movement; this causes the secondary plate to oscillate, resulting in a noise and driveline vibration.

Answer B is wrong. A dual-mass flywheel contains two plates, a bearing, and internal springs that absorb torsional vibrations. They are difficult to resurface.

Answer C is wrong. Technician A is correct.

Answer D is wrong. Technician A is correct.

Answer A is wrong. Some countershafts have a solid countershaft fixed to the case; it is fastened and does not spin. The countershaft gear assembly rides on needle bearings between the countershaft and the gear cluster.

Answer B is wrong. Another type of countershaft contains tapered roller bearings.

Answer C is correct. Both technicians are correct.

Answer D is wrong. Both technicians are correct.

All EXCEPT .

All Except type ASE style question.

ASE will use the word EXCEPT in a question. The correct answer is the answer that doesn't fit. Remember as you're eliminating answers, to eliminate answers that are correct and fit the question. You are searching for the answer that is false. This type of question should be read carefully. Thought must be taken when answering an EXCEPT or LEAST likely type question.

MOST LIKELY

Take enough time to read the question carefully before you begin the process of elimination. ASE tests sometimes contain questions that contain the term MOST LIKELY. This changes the normal flow, because with this question the correct answer is the answer that is most likely correct. Keep this in mind and eliminate answers that are LEAST likely to fit the question.
